The brief
The owners of a 1930s semi in Wollaston had inherited a tired lean-to that was too cold to use from October through to March. They wanted a room they could sit in all year round, and one that looked as though it had always been part of the house rather than bolted onto the back of it.
What we did
We replaced the original structure with a Victorian conservatory in white uPVC, matching the sightlines of the existing bay to the front of the property. The dwarf wall was rebuilt in reclaimed brick from a local yard so the colour sat properly against forty years of weathering on the main elevation.
Heat was the real problem, so the glazing does the work: an active self-cleaning roof with a solar control coating, and argon-filled units in the frames. The room now holds its temperature without a radiator running constantly.
The products
- Victorian conservatory, four facet, white uPVC
- Self-cleaning solar control glass roof
- Argon-filled A-rated double glazed units
- French doors onto the garden with a low threshold
- Reclaimed brick dwarf wall
The result
Installation took nine working days from first fix to sign off. The room is now used year round, and the owners report it is the warmest part of the house on a bright winter afternoon.
