How Can I Tell If My Windows Need Replacing?

Old rotting window needs replacing

uPVC windows usually last for about 15 to 20 years before needing replacing. Although the glass might be in good condition and the double glazing intact still, if your frames are not up to scratch, this is a sign you need to get them replaced.

Window Frames Are Difficult To Clean

One of the first things you’ll notice about your windows that will lead you to conclude they need replacing, is that it is impossible to get the uPVC frames clean. When you clean your windows, the frames might feel brittle and coarse and are difficult to remove stains from. This is a sign the uVPC is nearing the end of its life. Once you’ve noticed this problem, look for other signs that your windows are not doing the job they should be doing.

Windows Do Not Close Properly

Check your windows close and open properly. Over the years, it’s easy to ignore a stiff open or close mechanism however this is a sign that the mechanisms holding the window in place or the locks, are not functioning correctly.

Cold Spots Or Draughts Coming Through The Window

It’s summer at the moment but when it gets colder if your window frames aren’t sealed correctly any more they will let draughts in. You might not notice as much if you have curtains or thermal blinds but if you have other signs your windows are deteriorating, next time it’s windy run the back of your hand around the window frames and see if you can feel a breeze.

Noise Pollution Is Louder

Increased noise pollution is not something you’ll notice over a long period of time however if you’re concerned about your windows, ask a friend if they could compare the sound of traffic going past their house to yours. You could even download a decibel meter on your phone that will tell you how many decibels it is. Compare it with someone who has newer windows then you, and you will likely notice a difference.

The Glass Doesn’t Look Good Any More

The life of double glazing is also finite, and you may notice, as your windows deteriorate, that the glass becomes foggy or you can see condensation appearing. This is another tell-tale sign that the glass and windows are nearing the end of their usable life.

Window Frames Are Rotting

At the beginning of this article we talked about how uPVC can become difficult to clean however if you also notice that the seals around the windows are rotten or the frames themselves are physically falling apart, this is something that should highlight that you need to get them checked and changed.

Noticing any of these problems with your windows is a wake-up call that you need to act fast to fix them before they get worse. Not only are they going to be less effective as windows, but they can also make your home more vulnerable to burglaries.
