24 May What’s The Difference Between PVC and uPVC Windows?
As window installers in Northamptonshire, we’re often asked about the difference between PVC and uPVC. Both are types of vinyl widely used in the construction industry. Both are flexible, versatile, and hard-wearing. But only uPVC can be used for windows and doors. So, what’s the difference? Read on to find out.
Properties of PVC
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is often used to make siding and fencing. However, it’s completely banned in the use of toy products in the EU and US due to its toxicity.
PVC contains phthalates and BPA, chemical compounds that give PVC its flexibility. If PVC is exposed to high temperatures, it emits toxic fumes that are harmful to our health and the environment. Even so, it’s still used in the construction industry.
However, because of its flexibility, PVC is very porous, making it difficult to remove stains and maintain. For this reason, it’s not used to make windows or doors.
Properties of uPVC
uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) doesn’t contain phthalates or BPA, making it a much safer product for us and the environment. It still has all the benefits of vinyl, but it’s much more hard-wearing than PVC and requires almost zero maintenance.
It’s widely used in the window and door industry because of its high thermal efficiency and durability.
If you’re thinking about getting new windows and doors but you’re unsure if uPVC is the right option, there are some benefits to consider:
- Less porous, meaning almost no maintenance.
- High energy efficiency, so will reduce your energy bills.
- Highly durable and will last for decades.
- High impact resistance, so less prone to chips and scratches.
- Vivid colour options that maintain their brightness.
- Recyclable material, so better for the environment.
